The Brand
Wolvis is a poetic knitwear brand, known for its limited editions of scarves, characterised by offbeat colour combinations and luxurious textures.
• wolvis was founded in 2013 by Ghent-based architect Griet Depoorter. After a few years of working in architecture studios, she decided to follow her passion for knitwear. She explored new horizons and started playing and experimenting with both classic and innovative materials and techniques.
During her studies of Fashion at SASK Academie of Sint-Niklaas, she became even more inspired and passionate about knitting. Experimenting and creating on her knitting machine at night, and working in an architecture office during daytime, she decided in 2016 to fully focus on her brand, although architecture is never far away in the designs.
Wolvis keeps on refreshing thanks to Griet’s sense for design, sustainability, poetic collection concepts and inspiring local collaborations.
poetic knitwear
Belgian knitwear brand Wolvis weaves poetry into every garment. Our limited edition pieces stand out with their bold and distinctive colors, carefully chosen to reflect the essence of nature. We prioritize the use of premium natural fibers in crafting each item, ensuring both beauty and environmental consciousness.
Made in Europe
All collections are designed in-house in our atelier in Ghent, Belgium. The majority of our pieces are knitted by our production partner in Waregem, less than 50 kilometres from our studio. The socks, gloves, mittens and hats are produced by a Czech knitwear manufacturer specializing in 3D knitting.
If you’d like to learn more about how our products are made, feel free to check out the "Responsibility" section.
Natural materials
Wolvis is closely interwoven with the cycles of nature. As meteorological winters commence, so do wolvis winters unfold their soft embrace. And wolvis summers too mirror the exuberance of the natural world. At the end of such cycle, production comes to a pause. A collection appears and disappears, tailored to the story, tailored to the demand. This way, its uniqueness is maintained.
All our products contain extra fine merino wool, sourced from Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and South America, and spun and dyed in Italy.
The Team
Isabeau
Isabeau was the very first one to join the team. What started as an internship during her textile design studies, has now become a versatile all round job. Isabeau is known for her creativity, analytical mind and passion for numbers. Some days she is occupied with designing and other days she’s working on marketing, social media or researching sustainability. She assists Griet in all aspects of building a brand.
What song always puts you into a good mood?
There’s no way in which I won’t turn up the volume whenever I hear a Macklemore song. ‘Glorious’ or ‘Can’t hold us’ for example. But my all-time mood booster is ‘Mamma mia’ from Abba. Whenever I hear these songs, beware of dance moves and singing out of tune…
If you could become any other person for a day … who would it be?
I have always been a big Formule 1 fan, so I would love to be the Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc for a day. I think it would be super cool to be able to race around a circuit with a Formula 1 car without limit. (Preferably the Spa-Francorchamps circuit).
Cornelia
Cornelia got her degree in 2016 as an illustrator. After studying, she got her teaching degree and started a career in education. She loves to transfer her love for art to children and help them construct their own imaginary world. Cornelia and Griet have a shared love for wool and their children. Cornelia also has a weakness for all shades of pink.
What’s the most beautiful city you have ever been to?
15 years ago I fell in love with Amsterdam. I have been visiting the city every year ever since.
Which movie makes you nostalgic?
Frida. A movie (and woman) that left a big impression on me. I still listen to the soundtrack from time to time. Music often makes me nostalgic and brings back feelings from the past.
Louise
Louise joined the team in October 2021. With a degree in textile design and a natural curiosity, she helps making all kinds of aesthetic decisions during the design process. More practical things such as stitching labels are also on her weekly to do list. She’s a listener with her eyes.
What is your earliest memory?
As a child, I once hid in the hay while a cow was giving birth. There was a lot of tension in the stable. When the baby calf seemed healthy, everyone present felt a big relief. Nothing is more beautiful than such a small new life.
What kind of flower best matches your personality?
Scabiosa. This flower has small, soft petals and a thin stem. It’s known as a fragile flower that blooms nicely. It represents joy, pureness and love.
Griet
Griet is the founder and beating heart of Wolvis. In 2012, she bought her first knitting machine. After much experimentation, the first Wolvis collection appeared at the end of 2013; scarves in geometric patterns with carefully chosen colours.
In the early years, Griet made everything herself. In 2016, Griet let her first collection, consisting of 4 scarves, go into production at Alex, our knitwear producer. Meanwhile, you will not only find scarves in our range but also mittens, hats socks and occasionally garments.
What is your favourite season?
I like spring and autumn, the interseasons. Or the start of a new season. The first rainy day after summer or the first rays of sun after a rainy winter.
What book is on your nightstand?
I am currently reading ‘I Am An Island’ by Tamsin Calidas. My new favourite!
our responsibility
Wolvis’ mission is to create exquisite knitwear pieces: tangible narratives that inspire, touch the heart, and foster genuine connections. We bear the weight of responsibility in developing novel products, always mindful of our impact on the environment.
“We take our responsibility for developing innovative products seriously, always keeping our impact on the environment in mind.”
• Griet, founder of Wolvis
taking care of your wolvis
A wolvis contains natural materials and is designed and crafted to last a lifetime, so here are some tips to surround it with the care it deserves.
washing
Your Wolvis knit doesn’t require frequent washing. Just let it blow in the wind for a while to refresh. If you prefer to machine wash your piece, please use the wool wash program. Don’t use fabric softener, let it dry flat, so it retains its shape.
Safekeeping
When you don’t wear your wolvis, store it in a cotton totebag or a shoe box, snuggle it around a piece of cedar wood and let it hibernate.
Why cedar wood? Moths like merino wool just as much as you do, but they hate the smell of cedar wood.
Restoring
Loose stitches or a broken thread in your beloved wolvis? No worries, we can take care of it!
Just send a picture to info@wolvis.be, and we’ll see what we can do for you.
